Rick Rescorla (1939–2001) was a British-American soldier and security director for Morgan Stanley in the World Trade Center South Tower, credited with saving over 2,700 lives on 9/11. A Vietnam veteran who predicted a terrorist attack, he enforced rigorous, regular evacuation drills. When the first tower was hit, he ignored official orders to stay put, evacuated his employees, and died while returning to the tower to find survivors.
Key Aspects of His Story:
- Preparation: After the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, Rescorla suspected the towers were still vulnerable, forcing employees to practice descending from the 44th floor regularly.
- Actions on 9/11: When the first plane hit, he used his megaphone to initiate a calm evacuation of all 20 floors occupied by Morgan Stanley.
- Calm Leadership: As people descended, Rescorla sang Cornish songs and "God Bless America" to keep them calm and moving down the stairwell.
- Final Sacrifice: Rescorla was last seen on the 10th floor, looking for any remaining employees shortly before the South Tower collapsed.
- Legacy: He was a highly decorated Vietnam combat leader whose actions are immortalized in the book Heart of a Soldier and through a statue at Fort Benning.
