πŸ“– Plot Summary

In 1935 Texas, Sheriff Royce Spalding is accidentally killed by a drunk Black teenager, Wylie; a white mob lynches Wylie the same day. Royce’s widow, Edna, struggles to keep their cotton farm and raise her children despite pressure from a banker to sell. A Black drifter, Moses β€œMoze” Hadner, arrives seeking work; despite initial distrust, Edna hires him to help on the farm. A blind war veteran, Will, moves in as a boarder and gradually bonds with the children after saving one during a tornado. With cotton prices collapsing, Edna and Moze race to harvest the first bale in the county to win a prize and save the farm. After the Ku Klux Klan attacks Moze, he leaves for safety, and the film ends with a symbolic church scene of reconciliation between the living and the dead.
